Information

The 3rd Australasian Virology MasterClass is a unique post graduate course in Medical Virology offered by specialist practitioners working in the discipline. This intense two week course has been established to provide up to date and comprehensive information relevant to modern diagnostic, molecular and clinical virology.

The 2006 and 2007 Virology MasterClasses attracted participants from Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Brunei. Highly acclaimed and previously oversubscribed, the course will offered again in 2010.

Who should attend

Pathologists, infectious disease physicians, researchers, post graduate students, academic, diagnostic and public health professionals who wish to increase their knowledge of medical virology and virology networks in Australasia.

Content and Outline

Morning lectures by highly experienced local and interstate speakers will be followed by dry and wet practicals and laboratory visits each afternoon. Theoretical scenarios and interactive sessions will be used to support the lectures.

  • Virus structure, classification and replication
  • Pathogenesis and epidemiology of virus infections
  • Vaccination, antivirals, gene therapy, surveillance and eradication
  • Clinical features, laboratory diagnosis, management and control of major human virus infections
  • Dealing with bioterrorism, containment, diagnostic laboratory standards and quality assurance
  • Principles of viral bioinformatics and phylogenetics.

Practical work and workshops

Negative staining electron microscopy and virion morphology | Virus isolation, including viral cytopathic effects, plaque assay, immuno-staining | Virus purification, including principles of ultra-centrifugation, SDS-PAGE, ELISA, Western blot and PCR | quantitative and reverse transcription PCR | Viral bioinformatics, microarray, proteomics.
